Half of the marriages seek divorce/break up in the first 7 years.
67% of new parents report significant drop in couple’s satisfaction in the first 3 years of their child’s life.

Outside perspective, right tools, guidance and respectful ways of communication can help to safe your relationship.

How does therapy help your relationship?

Couples therapy is a counselling that aims to improve the adjustment of two people who created a unique relationship.

During counselling sessions, you will learn how to listen to each other and how to communicate in an effective and respectful way. You will discover your partners love language and their expectations from the relationship. You will be able to identify yours and your partner’s unhelpful behavioural patterns (defensiveness, resentment, anger, lack of compassion or kindness towards each other, insecurity and luck of acceptance). This will help you notice them when they emerge, and with the techniques the counsellor teaches you, turn these around to more helpful ones.

Therapist will take no sides; the commitment is to the couple. The therapist will help you identify and learn tools to solve problems; set goals and build resilience; help you to take responsibility and find a win-win conflict resolution.

“I get better results in my relationship by cooperating interdependently than by competing independently.”
- Stephen R. Covey

What to expect from Couples Counselling?

The therapy process can take between three months to a year, depending in the severity of the problems as well as work that is being put into change by both partners during the process of change. Each session will last around 50 minutes. Sometimes the therapist might ask you to see you separately.

During the first session, the assessment, the therapist will ask you few questions about your relationship, your history and the patterns of the issue.

They may ask questions such as:

• What is the reason you are seeking counselling?
• What issues you have been experiencing in your relationship and how long for?
• Anything else that is relevant to this issue, such as background history
• What have you and your partner done to resolve the problems you are experiencing?
• Have you seen a relationship counsellor or anyone else to help you resolve your problems in the past?
• What outcomes would you like to achieve and what are your expectations from the counselling?

You will be given homework (cognitive or behavioural) in most sessions. The real work and change will be happening between sessions.
