Helen was voted a Psychologist of the year in the London and South East Prestige Awards 2020/21 and she was nominated for Corporate Live Wire prestige award for her art therapy.
I bring to my work a lifetime of working to be in the Here and Now in every situation and this includes my therapy room. I offer a secure, empathic, kind and restful space for people who need help with their particular personal journey.
I am a qualified Art Therapist and I am a musician and practising artist. I spent 10 years working for Victim Support. I was a volunteer for 4 years specialising in domestic violence cases and then spent 6 years as a member of staff managing a team of volunteers who emotionally supported victims of crime. I carried out regular supervision and managed a busy caseload of my own. This was invaluable experience to bring to my art therapy practice.
I have 5 years’ experience of working in a school for children with special needs. I have had success in dealing with children who were severely physically disabled as well as being autistic, having Downs Syndrome and having intense anxiety. The children were able to have a space with me where they could release their frustrations and play freely. One particular child, who was autistic and too anxious to leave her wheelchair and walk about, by the end of the 3 years of therapy walked the length of the school to the therapy room and then walked back unaided.
I work with adults with a range of diagnosed mental health problems such as Bipolar and depression. I give therapy to students who are studying for the MA in art therapy. My clients and their art making and the therapeutic relationship are at the centre of my therapeutic approach. Over the years, I have offered a peaceful and ‘holding’ space for all of my clients.
I have been running a group with elderly clients who have a diagnosis of Dementia for 4 years and it is wonderful to see how the clients have blossomed over time. I hope to have an exhibition of their work later this year.
When appropriate I bring spirituality into the session if the client is open to this. Having been trained in a Jungian approach to art psychotherapy I would like to finish my introduction with his quote:
‘If there is a fear of falling, the only safety is in deliberately jumping.’
I invite you to ‘jump’ with me safely and share the magic of Art Therapy.
