"Having previously suffered from OCD for 10 years, I choose this area to specialise in after completing an Honours Degree in Psychology. Knowing how torturous it can be, I wanted to help others who suffered from this disorder."
The most important message that I wish people suffering from OCD to receive is that... It can be overcome and I am living proof of this also, many others that I have treated have also overcome OCD and are now living with peace in their minds.
My name is Christina Cushnahan and I am a Specialist OCD and Anxiety Therapist with over 25 years of experience in the area.
I undertook a Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychotherapy so that I would be better equipped to treat the condition.
For the past 25 years I have studied and researched OCD, working with people who suffer from mild to severe cases of OCD and Anxiety, using Exposure Response Prevention Therapy. Approximately 11 years ago, I set up a support group for people suffering with OCD and I have gained so much knowledge of how the condition manifests and how debilitating it can be for the sufferer.
My personal experience in this area, gives me the inside knowledge of how the thought processes of an OCD sufferer work and also I can empathise with the sufferer.
I have felt how the mind begins to doubt and how that can quickly develop until the person is caught in a vicious cycle of misery but it can be reversed with therapy and some hard work.
Behavioural Therapy is very worthwhile as it changes the thought patterns neurologically and so the recovery is not reversible and the automatic thinking patterns return to normal.
